POPs Consultation Response

In response to DEFRA’s consultation proposing amendments the UK’s Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) Regulations, the RDF Industry Group wrote to DEFRA, highlighting our concerns about the commercial and/or technical feasibility of testing for the proposed POPs concentration limits, the infrastructure and sorting capacity required, and potential supply chain disruption.

The POPs consultation, in line with amendments to the Stockholm Convention to which the UK is committed, proposes waste concentration limits for several POPs to be amended, and for limits to be introduced for POPs that are not already regulated.

Waste exceeding these limits will need to be segregated and treated as hazardous, potentially disrupting the UK waste export market, which forms a vital part of the UK waste management strategy. A full list of the proposed limits can be found in the consultation (link below) and includes POPs often found in residual waste.
